As we experience first hand the climate crisis in California, with long-term droughts and historically destructive fires, it’s clear that we need a just transition for workers and the planet.

Last year, JWJ officially adopted climate justice and just transition as a key campaign area, and we have continued to co-convene local union members in the group Labor Rise for Climate, Jobs, Justice and Peace. We supported the Youth Climate Strike in September, working with gala-honoree Youth vs. Apocalypse and anchoring a protest at an Amazon Go store, as well as helping to coordinate a Green New Deal themed street mural.

In collaboration with local environmental justice group PODER, we have also laid the foundation to launch exciting work next year on a San Francisco Green New Deal that envisions a better climate future—where communities are healthy and resilient and workers have good, union jobs in a green economy.
